Oliver was directed by Janet Jackson and choreographed by Jackie Kopcsak. The kids put on an awesome show!

Oliver! was the first musical adaptation of a Charles Dickens’ work to become a hit on stage. Based on “Oliver Twist,” musician Lionel Bart wrote the book, music and lyrics for the original London production. The show launched the careers of
Davy Jones, Phil Collins and Steve Marriott. Oliver! became the first British musical to transfer successfully to Broadway and is still popular today.

Thank you to all the parents and supporters without whom, this show would never take place.

Finally, the city made provisions for overnight parking on an exception basis.

On January 4, 2009, the City went live with a new overnight parking ordinance and permit system. The following is a recap of some elements of this program and how it works.

The new ordinance allows residents five (5) free overnight parking permits per calendar year. This is five permits per address. The software that issues the permits keeps track of the number of permits issued to an address, the vehicles they were issued to, and the person who applied for the permit. Additional permits can be purchased on line for $5.00 a night.

Residents can obtain these free overnight exemptions or purchased permits on the Police Department’s web page by clicking on the Overnight Parking Permits link. https://www.paymycite.com/sanmarino/Temporarypermit.aspx

In situations where a resident cannot apply for, or print, a permit, the Dispatcher can complete the application screen and print the permit.

If for some reason a resident is issued a citation they believe should not have been issued because they obtained a permit, the resident can appeal the citation and a check of the electronic permit records will verify if a valid permit had been issued. If such a permit was issued (free or purchased) the overnight parking violation will be dismissed.

These recent amendments to the municipal code also made provision for long term permits in special situations, such as construction projects or catastrophic illnesses. In these situations an applicant can submit a letter to the Chief of Police with the required $50.00 fee. This letter must articulate the reason the special exemption is being requested and provide the license number(s) of the vehicle(s) that will be parked on the street. If this request is granted the applicant will be issued hard copy permits with the applicable license number(s) as well as the expiration date of the permits.

The intent of modifying the overnight parking ordinance and the mechanism by which it is administered was to improve and streamline the process that maintains our aesthetics and safety by keeping cars off the street, yet also accommodates the occasional needs of residents to park on the street overnight. Like any change, this transition may well require additional refinements as we see how it works and make changes to improve it.

Should you encounter difficulties with this process or have any questions, please feel free to call the Police Department.

San Marino celebrates Independence at Lacy Park!

Our annual family tradition is to celebrate 4th of July at Lacy Park. We wake up early, stand in line and run to get our coveted place on the lawn in anticipation of the evening festivities. Well… I overslept… sort of. My daughter checked the time and said the park opened at 8 am, but… the doors opened at 7 am. Oh well… there’s always a first time.

We did find a spot close to the Virginia entrance of Lacy Park. It should be convenient trying to find it late at night.

This year, the program includes the Rotary Club of San Marino Parade with the San Marino City Council, San Marino School Board Members and Little League All Stars participating. The parade starts at 4:45 and will run through 6 pm.

From 5 pm to 8 pm is the Family Fun Zone time so bring the kidlets. Tom Sullivan’s Dixieland Band will entertain from 7 pm to 7:45 pm and San Marino High School Chambre Choir will perform God Bless America, National Anthem and America the Beautiful at 8:45 pm.

The biggest change over the last several months in San Marino is the number of homes being sold and going into escrow. Interestingly enough, home inventory is about the same. San Marino gets a little more than a dozen new home listings each month. with the inventory staying close to 40 over all.

Real estate market activity has picked up significantly in Pasadena and surrounding neighborhoods and San Marino is also seeing an upswing in activity. Price per square foot has gone up to the high $500s in May and that is based on 14 closed sales.

San Marino’s Market Action Index is still in the home buyer’s zone, but is slowly climbing back up:

Measure E - saving our San Marino schools

UPDATE: With 4,822 votes cast in support of Measure E, the vote passes by 71.17%.

If you live in San Marino or within the boundaries of San Marino Unified School District, you might be getting a phone call asking you to support Measure E. Here are some facts about this measure so that you can make an informed decision when you receive the ballot in the mail.

State budget cuts pose an immediate threat to San Marino’s schools.

Due to a $42 billion deficit, Sacramento has drastically cut school funding. For San Marino schools, this will mean a minimum $5 million budget shortfall. The budget cuts needed to address this shortfall will devastate much of the legacy of excellence our community has built in the local schools over the last 50 years.

One out of every three teachers will be lost.

Without Measure E funds, our schools will be forced to eliminate the jobs of 50 to 60 teachers – 1 out of every 3 teachers in the school district. Without these teachers, class sizes will increase dramatically — by 40% to 50% — doubling the number of students in some classes across all grade levels.

Cuts will impact every classroom and every child.

Without Measure E funds, schools will be forced to reduce the number of core academic classes available to students. Many advanced placement and honors classes will disappear. Foreign language opportunities will vanish. Academic and counseling services to students will be cut in half. Comprehensive K-12 visual and performing arts programs will be greatly reduced or eliminated as will the schools’ physical education and athletic programs.

Measure E is a local solution.

Measure E is a local parcel tax. These funds can only be used to support San Marino schools. It will raise stable, reliable funds for the schools for the next 6 years. It will make the schools less dependent on fluctuating and unpredictable state funding. The state cannot take them away.

This is a Mail Ballot election.

Measure E has been placed on the ballot as a mail ballot election. Every registered voter who lives within the school district, including those in the unincorporated county areas of the district, will receive a ballot beginning in early April. All ballots must be mailed and received at the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder’s office in Norwalk no later than May 5. The postmark on the ballot does not count. You will need to make sure to mail your ballot on or before April 28.

It will cost approximately $2 a day.

Approval of Measure E will create an annual cost of $795 per parcel – about $2.17 per day to preserve and protect the outstanding quality education provided to the children of the school district. This measure lasts for six years and then voters in the San Marino Unified School District can decide if it is still needed. The entire cost is deductible on state and federal taxes.

There is strict accountability.

Strict accountability is mandatory. Measure E requires that the school district be accountable to the voters of the community and that the funds are spent properly. All funds must be placed in a separate account and an annual report must be made public every year.

There is a senior exemption.

Any individual 65 or older who owns and occupies a single family home in the district is eligible for a full exemption from the cost of Measure E.

Measure E benefits everyone.

San Marino’s excellent schools have built, maintained and strengthened our property values. San Marino is the #1 unified school district in California. According to the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office, the value of homes in the San Marino school district continues to increase at a rate of 7% annually despite the economic downturn and current housing crisis. Home values in nearby communities have declined 30% or more in the last year alone.

If you live in San Marino, how do you feel about this measure? What kind of questions do you have or would like addressed?
